The Canadian foreign minister issued the statement because she believes that the move to retry Robert Schellenberg’s case was politically motivated. Arguably, Robert sentenced to death because the Chinese government was keen to retaliate against the Canadian government for it arrested Meng Wanzhou, and the country is on the verge of extraditing her to the United States were she would be charged for business dealings which took place in Iran (Fife, Chase, VanderKlippe & Curry, 2019). Indeed, the position is further justified by the fact that the Chinese government arrested Michael Kovrig, who is a former Canadian diplomat and Michael Spavor, an entrepreneur approximately ten days after the arrest of Meng. Perhaps, China is playing hardball in order for Canada to release Meng.
