Simon Quartz, is an age-old company dealing in mechanical wrist watches and wall clocks. They feel that over the years their employees have lost their motivation and their performance standards is dipping.
a. They have hired you as a consultant. Can you guide them about how can they use Mc Cleland’s Theory of Needs to motivate their employees?
b. Also, can you use ERG Theory, to help guide them to motivate their employees?
McClelland's theory can help you to identify the dominant motivators of people in the team. I will then use this information to influence how they set goals and provide feedback , and how to motivate and reward team members.
I will also use these motivators to craft, or design, the job around the team members, ensuring a better fit.
Based on the driving motivators of the workers, I will structure their leadership style and project assignments around each individual team member. This will help ensure that they all stay engaged , motivated, and happy with the work they're doing.
ERG theory is an acronym for Existence, Relatedness, and Growth.
These are the three basic needs that employees will try to satisfy. In the model, as one need is filled, this will provide motivation for the employee to want to fulfill another need. All three needs must be satisfied simultaneously in order for an individual to feel motivated. ERG Theory proposes that if a higher-level need fails to be filled then a person may regress and seek to further fill lower-level needs instead.
For example, if an ambitious employee isn’t provided with growth opportunities, then their motivation will be lower and they may become frustrated. This may cause them to seek out more relatedness needs. They may socialize with other members of the team more.
