Industrial relations, often known as employment relations, is an interdisciplinary academic discipline that analyzes the employment agreement, or the complex interrelationships that exist between employers and employees, labor/trade organizations, employer groups, and the government. In contrast to conventional economic theory, industrial relations scholarship assumes that labor markets are not fully competitive, and hence employers usually have more negotiating power than employees. More than productivity, employment, and income inequality are impacted by technological progress. It also opens up the possibility of changes in the nature of work. Several ethnographic studies have demonstrated how technological advances have changed the way people work, the roles they play in a firm's division of labor, and how these shifting roles change the stability of organizations.
