The two main distinct approaches used by human resource for motivation are:
1.The carrot approach - also called the paternalistic approach to motivation, suggests treating employees in a fatherly way and rewarding them. Carrot refers to rewards, which are often promised to individuals who act in the desired way and thus symbolizes positive motivation. Employees are expected to be motivated by the rewards, remain loyal and work hard.
2.The stick approach - Stick refers to punishments which are to be inflicted on individuals for not acting in the desired way; it symbolizes negative motivation. It represents the classical view of motivation which compels performance through threats of penalties for failure.
