Short-term goals, such as the number of items produced or profits made in a quarter, are prioritized in traditional quality management. Total quality management focuses on long-term improvements in how a product is manufactured as well as customer satisfaction. In continuous improvement, spending time upfront to understand the problem allows individuals to agree on the best course of action rapidly. Short-term results, or quick alleviation from difficulties, are the emphasis of traditional problem solutions.
