I would present the case for adopting a local area network across the whole company with the expected ROI (Return on investment) period based on the expected benefits and costs affecting existing processes in the company as well as opening up new opportunities to increase profit, reduce cost or protect income.

Directors don’t (and shouldn’t) care about how warm and fuzzy you will feel about the shiny new technology - that is irrelevant. What is relevant is will the LAN be a useful tool to help the company do what it does better, more cost effective or with less risk.

You need to make sure you are not getting the horse before the cart … you need to know and understand the company long term goals / strategy to be able to evaluate if this specific tactic is appropriate. Having done that you then can document a good case for the proposed change (or drop it if it turns out it wont make a useful difference).

For example, one of my clients has implemented such a network over a number of hectares of open area because it enabled them to implement real time updating of stock location, reducing wastage and improving quality of the produce. The local area network was just a means to and end, not the end goal itself.
