Identify at least 5 major employment relation issues and explain how one size fits all policy impact each one of them. Give examples in the pacific island countries.
Some of the major employment relation issues common in the Pacific island countries include:
1.Small economies and vast distances have led to an unfulfilled potential among an expanding young workforce: PICs are small island states situated across vast stretches of ocean thus creating transportation costs and market access problems.
2.There have been poor labour market outcomes given the young and growing populations in the Pacific islands and neglected urgency to improve labour market outcomes.
3.Ineffective and uneven social dialogue between the state employers and workers on effective labour market reforms e.g. trade unions.
4.Poor labour market outcomes have caused high migration rates in PICs in search of better opportunities abroad.
5.Public employment services in regions such as Papua New Guinea and Fiji are often basic and sometimes ineffective thus causing limited job placement and other challenges in government-run employment services.
A policy that can help alleviate these employment-related issues in the Pacific Island countries is addressing inequalities and strengthening labour market institutions in all regions. This will improve the situation by: expanding the economy so that the growing workforce can all be accommodated in, improving the labour market outcomes, promoting social dialogue in undeveloped regions, reducing migration by increasing opportunities for low-skilled workers and creating several job opportunities for youth in PICs.
