Identify and discuss the seven pillars of newsworthiness. Provide current news stories for every pillar that you identify.
Discuss three characteristics of each of the following mass media:
Television
radio
Choose real-world events and provide three examples of “breaking news”.
Impact
People are curious to learn how the narrative will influence them. They're usually curious about the consequences of doing a particular action, or not taking one at all. Consider the news of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
Timeliness
The name "news" comes from the fact that it is usually based on current occurrences. People are more likely to follow information that is current or relevant to an event. News that is shared for the first time on social media will elicit a stronger response than news that has been shared previously. In comparison to the 2016 discussion between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the recent US presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden is more newsworthy.
Prominence
People who are always in the public eye are more newsworthy than those who aren't. Whenever something impacts them, they flood the news headlines as a result of the attention they receive based on the public's sense of their importance. For example, the news of basketball player Kobe Bryant's death swamped news networks around the world.
The bizarre
Any bizarre event will undoubtedly generate the headlines because of its novelty. Take, for example, the news that a Brazilian Senator had been caught storing money between his butt cheeks.
Conflict
In any group, there will always be disagreements, especially when everyone does not agree with a colleague's point of view. Conflicts like wars, wrath, or disagreements always draw the public's attention. For example, consider the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, which has drawn international attention due to the media's dissemination of information.
Human Interest
The human condition is the topic of human-interest news. These stories always make us feel something. They have the power to encourage or demotivate, to make us happy or sad, and to motivate us to act. Consider the case of a repentant prisoner who rose through the ranks to become a motivational speaker, changing the lives of countless others. De Angulo, a Bolivian teenager and rape victim, established a foundation to provide psychological, legal, medical, and social aid to survivors of sexual abuse.
Both sound and pictures are used in television programming. Television's audio-visual nature makes it a magical medium that allows us to see the world from the comfort of our living rooms. Television's strong visual nature aids in the creation of vivid impressions in our thoughts, which leads to emotional involvement. Television visuals are also more remembered due to the auditory visual quality.
Radio as a broadcasting medium radio is the modulation of electromagnetic waves with frequencies lower than visible light to transmit signals. Modulation is the process of changing one or more features of a high frequency periodic waveform, known as the carrier signal, in relation to a modulating signal in electronics.
