Innovation is one of values added in your company’s core values. Management wants you to take steps that would create an innovative culture in the organization. How would you go about the exercise?
Innovation culture is the work environment that leaders cultivate in order to nurture discovery thinking and its application. In creating an innovative culture in the organization I would undertake the following steps;
Firstly, I set clear goals enough to align team members, and also loose enough that team members have autonomy in how to reach those goals. Secondly, I will assign employees assignments or workloads that match their interests and that provide them with positive challenge. It will motivate them to be more innovative. Thirdly, I create an open communication system that facilitate idea exchange, coordination, and collaboration. This will improve reasoning from colleagues point of view and be more proactive in innovation.
Fourthly, I will design and build a feedback system that is frequent, constructive, and supportive to promote the ideas. Fifthly, I will engage in reward system to award innovativeness in the organization by creating equitable and generous rewards and recognition.
Afterwards, I will remove all unnecessary bureaucracy since it creates long lag times and institutional churn that slow innovation down to the point of irrelevance, and it demotivates innovators by putting road blocks in their way. Lastly, I will encourage supportive collaboration across teams and divisions thus promoting the innovative culture.
