Amstel, Desperados, Sol, Tiger, and Birra Moretti are five very different beer brands with very diverse histories that continue to establish the gold standard for beer consumption worldwide. The majority of Heineken beer is produced at their Zoeterwoude, Netherlands, and brewery. Just 22 years old, Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought De Hooiberg (the haystack) brewery in Amsterdam in 1864 and founded the Heineken firm. Heineken started using bottom-fermenting yeast in 1869. The brewery changed its name to Heineken's Bierbrouwerij Maatschappij (HBM) in 1873, and in 1874, it constructed a second facility in Rotterdam. In the Heineken laboratory in 1886, Dr. H. Elion, a French chemist Louis Pasteur, discovered the "Heineken A-yeast." Heineken beer still uses this yeast as a primary ingredient.
