Analyse: Analyze the process to find out what's causing the variety and poor results (defects). Root cause analysis (RCA) is a technique for determining the root causes of a problem. FMEA (failure mode and effects analysis) to identify potential product, service, and process failures. To discover various types of variability inside a process, use a multi-vari chart.

Improve: Address and eliminate the root causes to improve process performance: Design of experiments (DOE) to fix problems in complex projects where many factors influence the outcome and it is impossible to isolate one component or parameter from the others Kaizen event to initiate rapid change by concentrating on a narrow project and utilizing the ideas and motivation of others.
