Advantages of Matrix Form of Organization

Departmentalization is the organization’s formal structure comprising of various managerial positions and departments related to each other. The growth of an organization leads to increased scope of its operation which increases the levels of management, its departments and subunits to meet its objectives (Ahmed, 2017). Departmentalization enhances flexibility, unity and adaptability in the entire organization. Therefore, departmentalization of a university, hospital and manufacturing firm will result from specialization and division of labor in these organizations. Hence, utilizing their managerial capabilities and achieve their objective accordingly.

           The commonly used form of organizational structure is matrix organization which employees have two managers to report to. It is composed of two or more organizational structures hence existence of double chains of command in an organization. Therefore, hospitals, universities and manufacturing firms adapt strong and balanced matrix organization structure for efficient communication within the organization (Parker, Rakes & Arndt, 2017). Matrix organizational structure enhances employees’ motivation, cultivates teamwork, maximum utilization of resources, allows for employee development and influences collaboration and faster decision making within organizational departments.

           Matrix form of organization enhances collaboration among different departments in the organization. According to Allington (2020), matrix organizations in universities and hospitals unites highly skilled individuals from different departments hence maximizing resource utilization. It integrates functional and project management structures thus increasing efficiency and effectiveness in the manufacturing firm. Employees have two managers to report to thereby faster decision making in the firm. There is efficient communication between the departments in the organization through effective collaboration. Matrix form of organization encourages open work culture hence making it a more dynamic organizational structure.

           Employee development is also one of the key advantages of matrix organization. Employees working in a university, hospital and manufacturing firm gains more interpersonal skills, human relation skills, communication skills and other skill sets due to operation with more than one manager. Employee development results to proper utilization of organizational resources. There is cultivation of teamwork in the organization as employees stick to their functional roles leading to achievement of the organization’s goals. Employee motivation is achieved through matrix organization as employees have more autonomy in their projects. However, employees are encouraged and motivated to work hard to meet the organizational goals (Roosa, 2020).
