A 'discontinuous invention' may change existing consumption patterns or even generate new ones. Portable audio equipment, for example, has progressed from the radio to the cassette tape player, to the compact disk player, to the digital audio player, and now to Cloud-based devices. Discontinuous innovation has the ability to drastically alter customer preferences and, as a result, generate new demand for a wide range of products.
