The intrinsic economic value of plastics has led to detrimental impacts on the natural environment. The prevalence of plastics in in the present day has made some researcher refer the modern day as "the plastic age." As a result of their ease of production, impermeability, low cost, and resistance to temperatures, light and chemicals, plastics are utilized in a wide range of goods substituting other materials like paper, leather, glass, ceramic, wood and metal. Whilst the advantages of plastics are evident ranging from their use in stationeries to spaceships, their extensive use alongside their resistance to biodegradation eventually leads to their build-up in the environment resulting to increasing volumes of plastic pollution across cities in the world.

The toxic pollutants in plastics adversely impacts the environment in the form of land, water and air pollution. The accumulation of plastic wastes in water bodies and land endangers aquatic animals, local animals and different plant species. Plastic wastes contaminates aquatic animals rendering serious health problems to humans when consumed. Similarly, plastic wastes disrupt the food chain by killing different organisms in the ecosystem, degrade water, land and air quality by releasing toxic components which potentially causes harm to living organisms.

Thus the primary solution to plastic pollution endorsing plastics recycling policies by companies manufacturing them. Encouraging the recycling of plastics is surefire to reducing plastic waste. Moreover, cities should also ban the manufacture of disposable plastics and replace them with environmentally friendly ones such as reusable water bottle and shopping bags. Lastly, government should launch environmental initiatives that spread awareness on the dangers of plastic and educate the masses on the importance of replacing plastics with low-cost materials like bamboos.
