Stono Rebellion, 1739 Some elements are believed to have sparked the rebellion. Top among them is the August 1739 security act that made it mandatory for white men to carry their firearms to church on Sunday's. Thus the slaves concluded that the best time to rebel is at this time when there will be a small presence of armed white men around the plantation. Historians regard the Malaria epidemic that affected Charlestown as one of the factors that may have contributed to the rebellion. Nat Turner's Rebellion The rebellion that took place in Virginia was a successful rebellion that was provoked by Turner who believed that he had a divine calling. He confessed to having heard voices in his head and credited an eclipse of the Sun as a sign from God as a go ahead. Turner recruited slaves when he was preaching in the field. In 1831 he managed to secure weapons and killed the Travis family, Turner and his men enlisted other 75 slaves and as the rebellion continued other slaves joined in. The revolt was suppressed by the local militia with the Aid of American troops. A farmer captured Turner six weeks later and authorities hanged him alongside his comrades.
