The Métis people began in the 1700s when French and Scottish fur traders married Aboriginal women such as Cree and Anishinabe women (Ojibway). In the Northwest, their descendants established a distinct culture, collective consciousness, and nationhood. Along the fur trade routes, different Métis tribes arose.
