Compare how the settlements in British Columbia were different from those in the United Province of Canada.
In reaction to the Fraser River Gold Rush, the colony of British Columbia was established in 1858. (See also The Fraser River Gold Rush and British Columbia's Inception.) In 1864, the colony formed a representative government, and in 1866, it united with the colony of Vancouver Island. Amor De Cosmos founded the Confederation League in May 1868 to introduce responsible government to British Columbia and to join Confederation. The Confederation League passed 37 resolutions in September 1868 defining the terms of a union with the Dominion of Canada. Both the BC legislature and the federal parliament approved the terms in 1871. On July 20, 1871, the colony was admitted to Canada as the country's sixth province.
