Analyse how ideas of the Enlightenment in the 19th century led to the abolition of slavery
In the 19th century, Enlightenment philosophy strongly influenced American freedom. Enlightenment thinkers argued that liberty was a natural human right and that reason and scientific knowledge, not the state of the church, were responsible for human progress. This ideal of the natural rights of man definitely played a key role in the abolition of slave trade by Britain and the United States towards the end of 1807, and later the abolition of slavery altogether in 1834 in the British Empire and 1863 in the US.
