Cavite Mutiny was a brief uprising of 200 troops of Filipino and some workers at the Cavite arsenal and which Spanish used as an excuse of repression of the embryonic Philippine nationalist movement. The harsh reaction of the Spanish government was ironical and ultimately promoted the nationalist cause. It was crushed quickly but the Spanish authority under the leadership of Rafael de Izquierdo reacted magnifying the incident and used it as an excuse to clamp down on those Filipinos calling for reformation of the government. Some Filipino intellectuals were captured and accused of being partners with the mutineers. The brief trial saw three priests – Mariano Gómez, José Burgos and Jacinto Zamora being publicly executed. Martyrdom of these three subsequently caused independence of Philippine.
