There are various factors that made WW1 a global conflict. By 1907, there were only two rival groups in Europe. However, a fight between these two European countries could draw the attention of other European nations into the war. The factors that made it a global conflict is the fact that countries outside Europe entered the war on one side or the other. Each of the involved European countries wanted allies and therefore they seek more allies from the outside world. They were to tip the balance of the war in their favor.

For example, Indian soldiers joined the allies at the battle of La Bassee in northern France. 1.5 million Indian soldiers and 1.3 Canadians, New Zealanders, Australians and South Africans entered the war to fight on the allied side. Many empires crumbled and amidst the war, America joined and rose to become a dominant world power. Also, Germany had colonies in West, East and South Africa. The war in Africa had Germany stage communication stations in Togoland where information was given to German ships in the Atlantic.
