At the time the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776, Benjamin Franklin is believed to have said: “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”  That was Franklin’s plea for national unity.  Was the Founders’ commitment to unity challenged between 1787 and 1821?
