Why, by the early 1930s, had Japan’s democratically-elected government become unpopular with the Japanese people?
After the world war I, as Japan was on allies' side, they also gained several German terrotory and thus their economy flourished. Their economy depended upon many exports system but since the other european countries were in Great depression, their tariffs increased and thus Japanese economy began to fall. As a result, the people blamed on the government for not having too much power and radical nationalists began to form, wanting to go back to former and traditional
values. Additionally, Japan progressed toward a democratic system of government. However, parliamentary government was not rooted deeply enough to withstand the economic and political pressures of the 1930s, during which military leaders became increasingly influential.
