The May Fourth Movement was a Chinese anti-imperialist, cultural, and political movement which grew out of student protests in Beijing on 4 May 1919. The movement sprang from the disillusionment with traditional Chinese culture following the failure of the Chinese Republic to address China's problems. Led by Scholars like Chen Duxiu, the movement created a desire for change across China. Shanghai workers went on strike, and businessmen went on strike to support students' patriotic movement across the country.

The following are some of the reasons that caused the occurrence of the May fourth movement; the first reason was student to oppose the granting of Shandong to the Japanese under former German concessions. The second reason was to draw and increase awareness of China's precarious position to the masses in China.

Thirdly, was to promote the creation of a Beijing student union. Another reason why May the fourth movement occurred was to hold a demonstration that afternoon in protest to the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Lastly, this movement occurred to recommend a large-scale gathering in Beijing.
