The first and second wars with the Dutch settlers were to blame. Between 1654 and 1659, rising tensions over the loss of pastures erupted into open battle in the first Khoi-Dutch war, which lasted from 1659 until 1660. A gang of Khoikhoi men led by Doman stole seven of the company's draught oxen, enraged by the colonists' increased cultivation and limits on valuable grazing territory. The Khoikhoi thought that the colonists would stop cultivating and therefore provide more grazing land. The firm formed an armed militia and dispatched it to collect the cattle, while some inhabitants retreated to the fort for safety.
