Chuck Burris was elected mayor of Stone Mountain, Georgia in 1997. He was elected mayor in the shadow of the historic Stone Mountain. The hugest bas relief sculpture had been sculpted on the face of the mountain as a foot memorial to the confederacy. The area was also the headquarters of the Ku Klax Klan's National Knights. Burris' election was significant as he was the first African American to hold that position.
