It is believed that Mesopotamia became the cradle of Western civilization because the Mesopotamian people inhabited the lush fertile land of the Tigris and Euphrates river valley. With access to such land, the Mesopotamians were able to produce an agricultural surplus beyond their daily needs. This made it possible for their society to employ people in activities other than agriculture, such as manufacture, trade and the creation of a ruling class and, eventually, civilization. Other centers of early civilization include: the Nile river delta, the Indus plain and the Yellow river valley in China.
