Why did the U. S. need a civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s if American is founded on freedom and equality?
Civil rights movement was initiated between 1950s and 1960s to bring social justice and equality in the US. Despite the nation being founded on the core pillars of social equity and freedom, racism was still rampant with African Americans being the most victimised group. Therefore, the civil rights movement was the only pathway of enabling black Americans secure legal rights against racial discrimination.
