Augustine produced a sophisticated interpretation of Christian thinking by merging it with the philosophy of Plato and Neo-platonic philosophies. With this merger of ideas, Christianity takes on the idea of God as an independent, immaterial reality - the transcendent God. Augustine recommends that Christians should focus on the importance of their relationship with God. Augustine of Hippo argues that to be a Christian was to be in companionship with the Son of God, to be unified with him in an intensely personal unification that reinvigorated on individual belief, not on external support or custom.
