The Virginia House of Burgesses was the most important awakening because it marked the beginning of an era of emancipation from the British Monarch by the colonies. The governor of Virginia, George Yeardley successfully led the emancipation by first repealing martial law, and then creating a General Assembly that would be tasked with enacting legislation to govern the colony. In essence, the House of Burgesses' actions meant that the monarch had lost control over the colony. The awakening served as an example that independence of the colonies was feasible.
