During the British Raj, the hill stations tried to reinstate democracy. Many people believed that the forces of democracy at the hills were becoming unstoppable. Although the British tried to retain the summer outposts that attracted wealthy Indians, majority of the wealthy Indians had already began to emulate the British way of educating their children in boarding schools and holidaying. The hill stations also re-introduced the urge for new comfort homes with gardens like the ones in Greece and Wales.
