African slaves were introduced to America for the sole purpose of providing labor on plantations. Slavery began when African slaves were brought to Jamestown, Virginia – North American colony – in 1619 to assist in the production of crops such as sugarcane and tobacco. During this time, Americans were in need of help in the farms and they were aware that Africans were strong and experienced in farming. Although the Americans would have chosen Indian-Americans, the community was succumbed by sicknesses that weakened their ability to provide the needed services.
