The latitudinal and longitudinal extent of India is 30 degrees. However, the north-south distance is 3214, while the east-west distance is 2933 km. The north-south extension is bigger than east-west extension as the distance between latitudinal and longitudinal extent at the equator is larger, which underlines the nature of the lines where the latitudes are parallel lines compared to longitudes which are not parallel. In other words, moving towards the poles, this extent will decrease. Consequently, there is a variation in distances between two latitudes.
