Due to its geographical situation Bangladesh is prone to flooding. Every year nearly 18% of the country is flooded bringing a loss of nearly 5000 people. Eighteen floods occurred in the 20th century. 1987, 1988 and 1951 were the most catastrophic. Recent were in 2004 and 2010.
The main problems that floods cause are loss of population (death); erosion and structural damages leave people without lands and houses and without working places as well (homelessness and unemployment); loss of agricultural lands leads to malnutrition; flooding cause rise of diseases as well.
For the UK flooding threat is not as vital as for Bangladesh. Most common types of flood for the UK are tidal, fluvial, groundwater and flash floods. Nearly 1,5% of UK's territory is at risk of flooding from the sea, less than 7% of territory has a risk to be flooded from the river at least once a century.
Major problems that victims of floods face in the UK are homelessness, property damage or loss and personal injuries. Deadliest flood in the UK took lives of 270 people, which is much less comparing to Bangladesh. Flash floodings are dangerous for urban (and not only) areas because of a sewage system, which becomes rapidly overfilled. This may cause health problems for people as well.
