Why do the north and south poles have 6 months of winter (darkness) and 6 months of sunshine, rather than regular seasons?

It depends on the angle at which a certain part of earth is inclined toward the sun. Poles have 6 months of sun or darkness because they are at the top of a sphere. Thus, while one pole is fully covered by sunlight, the other one is in complete darkness.
