Susan has to go from her house to the bank for some work. She has to pass a shopping mall and the

post office before she reaches the bank. These places are not in a straight line. Use this information and

explain with a sketch and a calculation how distances which are not in a straight line are calculated.

To calculate the distance between each couple of successive places, we can simple measure the distance along the straight line between them like shown in the figure. To measure the distance between home and bank, we can either measure the distance straight across home and bank or to measure it by adding corresponding distances between each two successive facilities.
