The primary and secondary impacts of earthquake in an emerging country such as Armenia in 1988 were terrible: 40% of industrial potential was destroyed by the primary and secondary impacts. At least 25 000 died due to the primary impact. About 210 000 students were not able to go to schools.

This earthquake made the authorities to found a special department for emergency situations, which in latter times helped and still helps a lot of Armenian citizens.
