Both Prince Mashele and Kgalema Motlanthe emphasise that critical reflection

is the main aspect that distinguishes human beings from animals. Without the

critical faculty or ability to reflect, one does not qualify to exist as a human being.

Therefore, such a “person” cannot “learn” in the true sense of the word, but would

at the most do as animals or other non-human things would do. Mere memorisation

of facts is simply a mechanical process that does not really amount to effective

learning. It is thus only human beings that can learn.

1. How is this text relevant to the notion of a subjective being?

2. Make a connection between the message of this text and the concept of

“learning”.

3. Write a paragraph where you compare Prince Mashele’s views and those

of Kgalema Motlanthe.

QUESTION 2 Taylor and Weber's scientific management system suggests that management should do all the thinking; they should set the goals, plan and supervise. It goes on to suggest that the workers should NOT think at all; they should just do the tasks required of them. Many theorists argued that the aim of Taylor and Weber, namely increased efficiency, would not be met if managers did not consider how their workers felt. Substantiate this statement with a practical example of a principal who imposes a certain decision on teachers and does not consider their feelings & paint a scenario that prove that teachers can never just teach without thinking about or carrying out other issues related to teaching and learning. how strong is the evidence for global warming? Lombardo (2009) puts forward the view that the significant rise in the earth’s temperature over the past century is the product of increased levels of atmospheric CO2 caused by greater use of fossil fuels. He maintains that this position is now generally agreed, and that steps should be taken to reduce future warming by restricting the output of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. However, Wong (2011) presents a range of counterarguments. She mentions evidence of historical climate change that cannot have been caused by rising levels of CO2, and also discusses the difficulty of obtaining reliable data on temperature changes, as well as other claims that solar activity may affect the amount of cloud cover and hence temperature levels. Such uncertainty, she considers raises doubts about the value of cutting CO2 production.
