STDM is an advanced form of TDM and is the primary switching technique is use now. The drawback of the TDM process is that if a device is not currently transmitting, its time slot is left unused and is therefore wasted. In contrast, is STDM, carrying capacity is assigned dynamically. If a device is not transmitting, its time slot can be used by the other devices, speeding up their transmission. In other words, a time slot is assigned to a device only if it has information to send. STDM eliminates wasted carrying capacity.
