Starting from rest, you run the engines at full power and holding a straight line, you observe that the ship accelerates uniformly from 0 m/s to 10 m/s over 2.25 km. The mass of the ship fully loaded is 42500 tonnes and the average water resistance is known to be 6.5 MN. The ships engines (4 x 16 cylinder engines with a total 4500 l) are rated at 46080 kW.


a. Determine the total work done during the test.

b. Calculate the amount of power the engines delivered throughout the test. Are they delivering the rated power?

c. Prepare a Sankey diagram to explain the energy flow from chemical energy in the diesel fuel through to the kinetic energy of the liner indicating any losses.
