Concrete is made up of Portland cement , sand , stone and water. It is a mixture of fine aggregate , coarse aggregate and water which is termed as conventional concrete. It is been in use in construction field for construction of buildings and many more structures due their good compressive strength . It is been used since 15o years in field of construction.

The conventional concrete which is a mixture of fine aggregate , coarse aggregate and water is in much use because of its good compressive strength. But , as the structures are advancing many alternatives to this conventional concrete are made to improve the properties of concrete. The four alternatives that increase the use and application of conventional concrete:-

  • Self Consolidating Concrete:- The mechanical vibrations is given to the conventional concrete to remove air pockets and aids in proper mixing. Self consolidating concrete is also known as self compacting concrete. The concrete having low yield stress , high deformability ,segregation resistance , viscosity in moderate level is known as self consolidating concrete. It compacts itself so that the voids and air gaps are filled without much vibration.
  • Flowable Fill:-The low strength concrete with flowable consistency is known as self compacting flowable fill concrete. It is an alternative to granular fill and helps in reducing labor costs.
  • Light Weight Concrete:-The light weight coarse aggregates such as shale , clay or slate in the concrete is known as lightweight concrete. It gives low density. It gives minimal cross-sections in the foundation.
  • High Weight Concrete:- The concrete with high radiation in terms of unit weight is known as high weight concrete. The shielding performance against radiation increases as the unit weight of concrete increases.
