Production linkages between agricultural and non-agricultural sectors arise from the interdependence of agriculture and industry for productive inputs i.e., supply of agricultural materials such as cotton, jute, sugar cane etc., to agro-based industries and supply of fertilizes, machinery and electricity by industry to agriculture over the last five decades.

Agriculture plays a major role in economic growth and development. As the provider of food it is a cornerstone of human existence. As a furnisher of industrial raw materials it is an important contributor to economic activity in other sectors of the economy.
