Professional ethics is a code of conduct that applies to professional practice. Just like company ethics, professional ethics are a set of actions by individuals. As members of the profession, accountants have a responsibility to uphold the highest ethical standards, not only to their employers and clients but to society as a whole. Every person who becomes an accountant is responsible for maintaining the high standards of the profession, regardless of the field of accounting in which that person is involved.

In order to ensure that all members of professional organizations understand the responsibilities of being professional accountants, such organizations in many countries have introduced a code of professional conduct that independent accountants must follow. At the heart of this code is a responsibility to the public, including customers, lenders, investors, and anyone else who relies on the work of an accountant.

The accountant must be honest in resolving conflicts between these groups, even if it involves sacrificing personal gain. Integrity means that the accountant is truthful and impartial and places service and public trust above personal gain. The accountant must also be objective. Objectivity means that an accountant is an impartial and intellectually honest person. Naturally, an accountant must also be independent. Independence means avoiding any relationship that violates the accountant's objectivity, or even appears to be.
