Since their inception, the theories of "realists" have been constantly criticized by "idealists", Marxists, and later - advocates of the concept of interdependence and some other theories. The school of political realism is accused not only of simplification, one-dimensionality, excessive political engagement but also of vagueness, insufficient concreteness of its key concepts, such as, for example, "balance of power", "security", etc., of the impossibility of using quantitative research methods. in the limited predictive abilities, etc.

Marxists characterized the "realists" as adherents of an aggressive US foreign policy (since the latter proceed from the inevitability of international conflicts and the struggle for world domination), justifying the policy of military confrontation between the two blocs and curbing the liberation struggle of the peoples (relying on strength and striving to maintain a balance of power).

The Marxist concept explains international politics by class interests. She argues that the antagonism of classes within nations and states creates antagonism in the relations between them. The capitalist system, based on irreconcilable class contradictions, after entering its last, imperialist stage, is distinguished by its particular aggressiveness and the desire of the leading powers to redistribute spheres of influence and to world domination. With the emergence of socialist states, the decisive influence on international politics is exerted by the struggle of two opposing systems: socialist and capitalist, which will end with the victory of socialism and communism on a world scale and the gradual "fusion of nations."

The Marxist approach to international relations reflected the real dependence of foreign policy on domestic policy, on the humanity of the internal state structure and political culture, on the level of well-being of citizens, and social justice. World experience shows that democratic states with a low level of social inequality and conflict, high political participation of citizens pursue a peaceful foreign policy, are open to equal international cooperation.
