1) Differentiate between signaling theory and human capital theory and argue for or against each theory?
The significance of human capital and signaling models of education is one of the oldest arguments in the literature on education economics. While the human capital theory asserts that education increases wages via boosting productivity, the signaling theory claims that education increases wages merely because it is an indication of a worker's competence.
Human Capital Theory proposes that training and education are investments that make people more productive in the long run. According to this notion, more productive people will make more money and be more employable. Instead of the influence education has on learners, signaling theory concentrates on the messages that education sends in the labor market. People, according to the hypothesis, have varying degrees of natural talent but no easy method to express that ability to prospective employers.
Both hypotheses, in my opinion, have merit, and they don't have to be mutually exclusive. The productivity of education, on the other hand, is declining at the post-secondary level. Even so, not every post-secondary education is created equal. Certain degrees are necessary for offering specialized training to increase production. A degree is required for vocations such as research scientists, teaching, doctors, and medicine. Practice-based studies make up a substantial component of this specialized education. Generally, it is only a signal that would be to minimize the significance of a degree that teaches very specific abilities.
However, for some degrees, particularly those in the social sciences and commerce, the importance of signaling appears to outweigh human capital in the labor market. While human capital obtained via schooling initially aids in obtaining a place in undergraduate universities, the time spent obtaining the degree does not contribute significantly to overall human capital. Its sole purpose is to serve as a signaling device.
