Competitive firms exists as price takers and their revenues is always measured in proportion to it's output. Such firms quantify output such as marginal revenue as a proportion of marginal cost and in a scenario where it's fixed cost of production cannot be recovered from output revenue then it will choose to shut down temporarily.
