About a third of South Africa's budget is spent on the wages of 1.2 million governmental servants, including national and municipal government officials, doctors, teachers, and police. This is the government's wage bill.

According to official projections, it would spend approximately 629 billion rands ($41.3 billion) on public sector pay in the fiscal year ending next month, rising to 697 billion rands by 2022/23.
