The appropriate measurement of food security is critical for targeting food and economic aid; supporting early famine warning and global monitoring systems; evaluating nutrition, health, and development programs; and informing government policy across many sectors.

There are five commonly used methods that can be used to assess food security:

  1. the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) method for estimating calories available per capita at the national level;
  2. household income and expenditure surveys;
  3. individual's dietary intake;
  4. anthropometry;
  5. experience-based food insecurity measurement scales.
