A community can be defined as a group of people who are living in a certain locality. A rural community refers to a group of people who are living in a rural set up. The following are some of the characteristics rural communities.
- Low population size. In a rural set up there are no many people who lives there. Many individuals have moved to other places mostly the urban centers in search of jobs, education or recreation activities.
- The community is composed of aged people. The rural community is mainly composed aged people since the young individuals have moved to other places in search of various services.
- Low cost of living. The rural community experiences a low cost of living mainly because their houses is not rented and that they mostly practice farming meaning they don't spend much money to purchase food.
- Lower wages. Rural communities are associated with low wages because they are self employed on farming activities which is on subsistence level.This means that the level of dependency is high on rural areas.
- Availability of natural resources. In the rural areas there is a small population density, therefore, the number individuals living in an area is small. This has allowed existence of nature such as trees.
