The indifference curves are convex to the origin because as a consumer increases his or her preference for one commodity over the other, the curve will show diminishing marginal rate of substitution. When diminishing marginal rate of substitution is in place, the marginal rate of substitution shows a downward, negative sloping convex curve reflecting consumption of one good over another.
