Although plagiarism might not be generally considered a criminal offense, some countries like India consider it to be a crime and can earn you a jail sentence. Some countries may not be strict at all on plagiarism and might consider it as professional flattery. Plagiarism is prohibited in most institutions in order to encourage the student to think more critically and expand their ability to judge. Borrowing other authors' ideas might be considered as laziness and lack of the ability to think critically on the part of students. Therefore, no matter how urgent the assignment is, students are encouraged to expand their thinking capacity and avoid dependency on already published works.
